Fun Fall Drink Recipes to try

Cranberry Margarita

2 cups of your favorite Tequila
1-1/3 cups cranberry juice
1 cup orange-flavored liqueur (grand mariner triple sec or Cointreau)
2/3 cup fresh-squeezed lime juice

Combine the tequila, cranberry juice, orange liqueur, and lime juice in a large pitcher.
Shake over ice.
Strain into margarita glasses filled with ice.
Serves: 10

Champagne and Pomegranate cocktail
1 sugar cube
1 fluid ounce pomegranate juice
3 fluid ounces dry Champagne
3 Pomegranate seeds

Place a sugar cube in the bottom of a champagne flute.
Pour the pomegranate juice over sugar cube
Add Champagne
Place a few pomegranate seeds into the glass.
Serves: 1

Caramel Apple Martini - with real caramel drizzle
2 parts butterscotch Schnapps
2 parts Sour Apple Pucker
1 part Vodka

Shake ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice.
Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
Rim glass with real caramel and crushed nuts or cinnamon sugar or crushed cinnamon almonds.
Serves: 1

Fall Sangria
1 750-ml bottle red wine Chianti
1/4 cup brandy
1/4 cup orange flavored liqueur (triple sec or Grand Mariner)
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 orange, thinly sliced
1/2 lemon, thinly sliced
1 apple, cored, and cut into thin wedges
1 750-ml bottle sparkling water, chilled

Combine everything but the sparkling water in a large plastic container or glass pitchers.
Cover and chill for2 hours.
When ready to serve, add the sparkling water.
Serves: 8

Annie lives in an orphanage run by the ill-tempered, heavy drinking Miss Hannigan.

Like the rest of the children, Annie doesn't like the orphanage and hates Miss Hannigan. When Annie is chosen to spend the Christmas holidays with the wealthy industrialist Oliver Warbucks, Miss Hannigan is infuriated that Annie will be spending the holidays in the lap of luxury. Warbucks is charmed by Annie's spunk and good spirits and is eager to adopt her, but Annie is convinced that one day her real parents will come back to claim her. Warbucks loves her enough to offer a fifty thousand dollar reward in the search for her folks. That's when Miss Hannigan's con-artist brother Rooster and his floozy girlfriend Lily, concoct a scheme to pose as Annie's long lost parents. Along the way Annie befriends a mutt named Sandy and even President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Now is the time to drive the scenic Going to the Sun Road.

Going to the Sun Road is one of the most amazing highlights of Glacier National Park. Going to the Sun is an engineering marvel that spans 48.7 miles through Glacier National Park's wild interior, winding around mountainsides and treating visitors to some of the best sights in northwest Montana.

Currently all of the Going-to-the-Sun Road is open for travel.

Starting at 12:01 am on Monday, September 19th, 2011 the fall road closure on the Westside of Going to the Sun Road for construction will begin.

Why is there road Construction??? The Going-to-the-Sun Road is now 75 years old and is in need of comprehensive rehabilitation to ensure that this National Historic Landmark is preserved for generations to come.
The Going to the Sun Road officially received its name, “The Going-to-the-Sun Road,” during the 1933 dedication at Logan Pass.

The road borrowed its name from nearby Going-to-the-Sun Mountain. The local legend, and 1933 press release issued by the U.S. Department of the Interior, tells the story of the deity, Sour Spirit, who came down from the Sun to teach the Blackfeet braves the rudiments of the hunt and on his way back to the sun, Sour Spirit had his image reproduced on the top of the mountain as an inspiration for the Blackfeet.

Without stopping, it usually takes approximately two hours to travel the Going to the Sun Road. The actual time depends on how often you stop to visit the points of interests along the way, as well as road construction (delays for construction can be as long as 40 minutes), and wildlife sighting delays.

Logan Pass is 32 miles from the west entrance at West Glacier and 18 miles from the east entrance at St Mary’s. The parking lot at Logan Pass usually fills up between the hours of 9:30 am to 4 pm daily.

To help reduce congestion on Going to the Sun Road vehicle size restrictions are enforced:
   Vehicles no longer than 21 feet including bumpers
   Vehicles no wider than 8 feet including mirrors
   Vehicle and vehicle combinations over 10 feet in height
between Avalanche Campground and the Rising Sun picnic area parking area on Going to the Sun Raod.

Jackson Glacier Overlook gives you the best opportunity to see a glacier from the Going to the Sun Road. Located on the eastside of Going to the Sun Road Jackson Glacier Overlook is between Logan Pass and St. Mary.

The Glacier National Park Entrance Fee into the park allows you to experience the Going-to-the Sun Road and many other spectacular resources.

Visitor’s Information Centers -gift Shops at Apgar, Logan Pass, Rising Sun, and St. Mary.

Logan Pass is the highest point on the Going-to-the Sun Road at 6,646 feet.

This traditional mountain bike race has evolved into a bicycle hillclimb from the bottom of Big Mountain Road to the Summit House. The length of the Ultimate King/Queen route is 13 miles, with 3700 vertical feet of climbing. The King/Queen route starts at the rental shop and is eight miles long with a 2,200 vertical climb. The Swan Rangers
7:30 am meet at Echo Lake Cafe on the Swan Highway near Bigfork, MT for breakfast at 7:30 am, leaving at 8:30 for a partial day outing in the nearby Swan Range. Those not wishing to join the group for breakfast can simply show up in the Swan River School parking lot across the street from the Echo Lake Café at 8:15 am to carpool for the day's outing.

Otokomi Lake – 11 miles round trip

A strenuous hike with a 1900 ft. elevation gain.

Starting at the Rising Sun Motor Inn in Glacier National Park, follow the trail towards Otokomi Lake. The trail parallels the east side of Rose Creek. Rose creek drainage from St. Mary Lake to the headwaters of Otokomi Lake is dominated by a series of fast-moving water cascades, impressive waterfalls, and turquoise pools of water……..a photographers delight. Most of these sights cannot be seen, from the "Going To The Sun Road. It’s only by hiking this lovely trail that we can experience, such a peaceful bit of nature.

One of the numerous enjoyments of this hike is to view the outstanding colorful rocks that make up the Rose Basin in which Otokomi Lake sets. The rock walls surrounding the lake are a deep, dark, throbbing red. Within this red basin bright green highlights of the stunted alpine Douglas firs and meadow grass seem to almost glow in a clear blue sky above.

A day hike or short backpack from Rising Sun Motor Lodge to Otokomi Lake. The trail begins in the wooded St. Mary Valley, and climbs around a hillside to the west to enter the Rose Creek drainage.

The trail passes Rose Creek along the Lewis thrust fault to a low-elevation cirque lake among blocky, reddish mountains.

As you hike along Rose Creek, we will go through a forested area of juniper trees, Douglas fir, maple, and many other tall trees. On the ground you find wild roses, asters, paintbrush, fireweed and beargrass. This trail shows off nature at her best.

As you leave the creek side, we will climb the trail upward going back and forth on switchbacks then climb through a forest of Douglas Fir and Lodgepole Pine. The needles from these trees will make soft footing through here. This is a dense area with trees.

After hiking along the forested creek valley for 2.5 miles past pools and small waterfalls, you climb onto an open rockslide area and Suddenly, you hike out of the trees and find yourself high above Rose creek from here Goat Mountain is clearly visible across the lake. This impressive view of Goat Mountain as it rises to an altitude of 8,826 feet is spectacular.

As you approach the Otokomi Lake basin, you cross a large slope of scree (also called talus an accumulation of broken rock fragments at the base of crags, mountain cliffs, or valley shoulders) and avalanche area where one can easily visualize the glacial action that carved the U-shaped valley where talus slopes come down from Goat Mountain at 8826' to Otokomi Lake.

Just before reaching the lake, the trail passes Otokomi Campground (back country permit needed to camp here overnight), located to the left of the trail. The trail bends around to the south-west before arriving at the outlet to Otokomi Lake. The lake covers the floor of the Rose Basin, named for the ruddy argillite cliffs surrounding the cirque.

The remoteness of this lake with the striking view of the surrounding basin is a panorama of sheer beauty!

SAINT MARY FALLS is 8/10th of a mile one way and the elevation gain is 35 feet. This Saint Mary Falls trail receives heavy use, is well maintained, and is easy to hike. The dense, deep-green forest is made up mostly of Douglas Fir and Maple trees. The beautiful Saint Mary's Falls trail parallels Virginia Creek prior to arriving at a footbridge crossing the Saint Mary River for a close-up view of Saint Mary Falls.

VIRGINIA FALLS is 1.55 miles one way with an elevation gain of 110 feet. Continuing past the footbridge, you parallel the confluence of the Saint Mary River and Virginia Creek and soon you will hear the thundering roar as you approach Virginia Falls. The waters that feed Virginia Falls come from Citadel Mountain and Almost-A-Dog Mountain to the south.

is the Bison Burger BBQ on Saturday, July 16th, 2011 from 12 Noon to 7 pm

An old-fashioned fun community BBQ with grilled bison burgers, baked beans, potato salad, watermelon, cake and huckleberry ice cream, complete with Fire truck rides and a Silent Auction.

Ferndale Volunteer Fire Department had been responding to fire, rescue and medical emergencies since 1950. They hold one fundraiser each year – a Bison Burger BBQ where you can enjoy a delicious meal prepared by the Ferndale Volunteer firefighters.

It is the time to show your appreciation by supporting our first emergency responders by attending this 61st annual fundraiser on Saturday, July 16th, 2011 for the Ferndale Volunteer Fire Department.

Last year, the fire fighters served over 700 grilled bison burgers!
The volunteers say that each bison burger they sell makes a difference every day. When you buy a bison burger, it helps pay for the equipment they need so that they can quickly and safely respond when we need them the most.

This year, the money raised at the BBQ will go towards purchasing a standby generator to power the Ferndale Fire Hall during electrical outages just like the power outage we experienced on July 7th, 2011.

The Fourth Annual Saddle Up AndPaint Plein Air Event
is scheduled for July 12th, 13th, and 14th, 2011
along the Swan River Nature Trail in Bigfork, Montana

Plein air painting is a true test of an Artists skills since it requires that a scene be completed in a short time span. Plein air painting requires complete confidence in their placement of color and the method of brushwork used.

The Swan River trail was once a power company access road that was transfrome into a two-mile non-motorized trail - a perfect place for a stroll, a hike, or even a horseback ride. The trailheads are located just off Grand Avenue in Bigfork and at the Kearny Rapids Bridge at Swan River Road.

During this three-day Plein Air Event, artists will work at their easels with their chosen medium interpreting the beauty that surrounds them. Only twenty artists have been selected for this event.

The rushing waters of the Swan River tumble into Flathead Lake where the crystal waters of the lake mirror the Swan Mountains and the dense evergreens of the Flathead National Forest. Which makes no better place to enjoy all that nature has to offer, that is why these artists will be spending three days in July capturing the beauty and grandeur of northwest Montana in watercolor, acrylics and oil.

Visitors are invited to walk the trail and talk with the artists and learn more about them and their techniques.

Families can watch artists at work chasing the light of the day, capturing the images of the mountains, river, rocks, sky, and the trees.

On Friday, July 15th, 2011 there will be a "Saddle Up and Paint" auction to benefit the Bigfork Museum of Art and History. This fundraising auction will include one piece of artwork donated by each Artist participating inthe Saddle Up and Paint Plein Art event.

Montana’s Rob Akey was born in Whitefish and, following a short time in California, grew up in Great Falls near the home and studio of Charlie Russell. It’s not surprising that Rob grew up to be a fan of Russell’s work, but he says he likes to focus, not on the horses, cowboys and Indians, but on the landscapes and Russell’s use of color. Rob paints the landscapes and vistas of his native state. He is represented in Kalispell’s Glacier Gallery, the Main Street Gallery in Ronan and Isley Jewelry & Gallery in Whitefish.

Kelly Apgar’s unique and innovative paintings are created using Cattle Markers, which are oil paint sticks originally designed to mark livestock. With a limited number of colors Kelly produces vivid, colorful, expressive works. She cuts and prepares all of her own pre-painted boards and finishes her work with painted cradled gallery frames. In addition to her work as a professional artist Kelly also teaches workshops in Cattle marker painting techniques, , coordinates and prepares exhibits for local galleries and often provides instructional workshops in other mediums.

Lavonne Burgard
Lavonne grew up on a farm in Iowa, but has called Montana home since 1975. For more than 30 years, she taught school in Iowa, Arizona, South Dakota, Australia and Montana. She was selected as the Montana Arts Educator of the Year 2006. Her art has been displayed at the Hockaday Museum of Art and in galleries in Kalispell, Columbia Falls and Whitefish.

In her Rockin’ Horse Studio, Merrily Dunham offers western art, western watercolor paintings of horses and western bronze sculpture of horses. It’s evident that Merrily loves horses. She chose the name of her favorite toy for her studio and her art reflect that love as well. Her watercolors depict horses, old barns, homestead cabins and Montana ghost towns in what Merrily calls a "slightly abstract impressionistic style." She also works in bronze and creates sculptures with wire.

Jane Latus Emmert is a joyful, spontaneous artist known for her bold colors and semi-impressionistic style. She says "I don’t strive for photo realism, I have a camera for that." Instead she prefers to paint from the heart, focusing on the elements in the scene that capture her eye. Emmert is a frequent art workshop instructor and a plein air oil painter in Glacier National Park.

Linda Ensign
Linda has sepnt most of her life in persuit of the "Arts". She has directed and acted in plays, designed and painted sets & theatre drops, been a costumer and run her own theatre company. Since high school she has made jewelry beginning with copper enamel then moving on to silver fabrication, setting stones and sculpted jewelry with PMC (precious metal clay). In addition, Linda has done commercial design work and numerous logos. Currently she sings with a ragtime orchestra, Dixieland band and a modern jazz band.

Haakon was born in 1974. He lives in northwest Montana where the environment is mountainous and somewhat Pacific. Hot in the summer and cold and dark and snowy in the winter. His paintings stem from the place itself, natural design, and interesting events both small and large. Following are some of Haakon's thoughts on painting:It is the artist’s foremost job to live and then create that experience in physical form. The first requirement of a painting is that it is understandable. Getting in front of a good idea is the essential part of a strong concept. A great painting is the result of an action. To get only the essentials clearly is completeness. There is nothing more satisfying than to pick it up and put it down without thought, in a smooth flow of consciousness, seeing where you’re going, knowing when you get there, and stopping.

I like drawing interesting objects with accuracy. It puts me in contact with the shape and design and action of the thing I’m looking at. Every natural form has its own order and rhythm.

The shapes a bird makes as it floats on a fast breeze. It will dive and hover and spin. That’s the shape you find in a feather itself or moving water or a tree root growing around a stone. Many things have that natural design and rhythm that tell a story of beauty in their action. Natural design is order using chaos to achieve completeness.“ Art holds that emotional perceptions put us in touch with things transcending the natural world and open up a correspondence with the world of ultimate realities."- Harold Speed You never really comprehend an event.

You experience it, live in it for a minute and walk away with a partial memory. Painting is to experience that minute fully enough to hold the impression of it in yourself, and then recreate it powerfully and clearly. I have always been interested in art. My mother nurtured the freedom of self -expression with children¹s art. Art was always encouraged from an early age. I received a Bachelors of Science degree in Design with a minor in art from the University of California at Davis. After College I went into commercial art. A few years later I opened my own business designing and Silkscreening T-shirts. While running the business, I started studying painting with local artist, Joe Abbrescia. That led to more workshops at Scottsdale Artist School and other local teachers. Painting gives me the opportunity to express and share on canvas what inspires me in my life. I love many aspects of planet earth such as the mountains, animals, flowers, rivers and oceans as well as people.I have spent the last 35 years in Montana where nature surrounds me.Living in such a beautiful natural area gives me an endless amount of inspiration and subject matter for my paintings.

Mary Kelly
Mary was born and raised in Montana’s beautiful Bitterroot Valley, I am now a resident of Polson. I am 68 years old, and have been painting seriously for 6 years. When young, I was always going to paint with vigor someday soon, when “this” was done, and “that” was finished. Suddenly I was over 60 and knew I better get with the program.

I am mainly self-taught, but have taken several art courses at the U of M and adult education through out the years. My first experience with painting was a workshop I attended with Robert Atwood, when I was in my 20s. From this workshop came the idea that someday I would paint. Drawing courses under Susan Barnes and Mary Ann Bonjorni and workshops with Robert Moore, Jim Lamb, Camille Przewodek, and Bob Phinney have come since I have been painting seriously.

Thomas was raised on the Navajo Indian Reservation and several cattle ranches in Colorado and New Mexico. He lived in the Southwest for six decades before calling Montana home. Lewis emerged as a serious painter in 1960 and has exhibited in galleries throughout the west. He is equally fascinated with both oils and watercolor and regularly switches from one to the other. His primary focus is the American landscape – western skies meeting the earth with natural and man-made features joining the two.

Jeff was born in Hartford, Connecticut and grew up with a love for fishing, the outdoors and art. He attended Howell Cheney Technical School in Manchester where he started his training as a machinist and toolmaker. Working in this trade for more than 20 years, Jeff painted whenever he could, taking classes in painting from artists Beth Ellis, Jim Wilcox, Luke Frazier and Dave Wade. In 2005, Jeff moved to the Flathead Valley to be closer to the wildlife, mountains and the western art world.

Nicholas Oberling was educated at Cornell University and studied painting under the atelier system at The Art Students League of New York for ten years. His work has been exhibited at the C.M. Russell Museum and is in the permanent collection of the Hockaday Museum of Art. A founding member of the Montana Painters Alliance, Oberling has been Artists in Residence at Glacier National Park and the Helena National Forest. He is represented by galleries in Southampton; New Jersey; Whitefish; Missoula; Indianapolis and Connecticut.

Morten E. Solberg is an artist's artist. He is versatile in all mediums. He paints in oil, acrylic and watercolor and his techniques range from photo-realism to total abstraction. Years of pursuing his craft via design studios and commercial art brought Mort to the West.

Mort attended The Cleveland Institute Of Art studying painting and design. He shed his commercial ties and concentrated on fine art and has been painting full time since 1970. After moving to Southern California's Orange County in 1968, he firmly established himself in the art world with memberships in the American Watercolor Society, the National Watercolor Society, the Society of Animal Artists, Wildlife Artists of the World, Knickerbocker Artists and the Society of Master Impressionists, as a lifetime Master member.

Awards and inclusions in prestigious collections followed. His paintings have graced the covers of numerous magazines, and he has been featured in American Artist, Wildlife Art News, Art West, Watercolor, Sports Afield, Sporting Classic, Southwest Art and Orange County Illustrated. In 1986, American Artist chose Mort as their "Artist of the Year". His accomplishments have earned him listings in Who's Who International Biographies, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Art, and Who's Who in the West. In 1993, Mort was elected to U.S. Art Magazines "Artist Hall of Fame". In 2001 Wildlife Art Magazine established Mort as a "Master Artist". Mort's work has been published as limited edition prints since 1977.

Lois Sturgis
Strictly a watercolorist, Lois has been painting for over 45 years. Her education has been painting-workshops, some very good watercolor books and the advise of her fellow painting friends. She enjoys painting both our-of-doors and from photo information and often plans plein aire trips to Glacier Park and surrounding areas.

Lois says she especially loves the way watercolor flows and blends, the experience of brilliant colors and subdued earth tones. “I prefer to paint the natural world, especially scenery, flowers, animals and an occasional portrait. And most of all, it’s fun!”

Julie Ann Wulf was born and raised in Great Falls, Montana, and has lived in Arizona, Florida and Jamaica. She received her Bachelor of fine Arts degree from the University of Arizona. Lee Proctor's Artist Biogrphy:

Born in Newport News VA. 1953 I grew up along the banks of Chesapeak Bay, Chasing lizards and swimming all the time.

My pathway to art began in Florida in 1972 with the gift of a camera for high school graduation. It changed my way of looking at the world. I studied light, shadow and composition. The colors of the tropical seas were a constant inspiration.

Following a vision, I moved to Montana and changed my major from ecology and animal behavior to studio art. I took every class available, from creative writing to sculpture.

Being in the power of the seasons and the magnificence of the pristine Montana landscape, I was transformed and knew from then on my life would be involved in the study of making art.

I finished my degree in Rochester New York and returned to Montana, built a studio, and began working mostly on commission, creating one of a kind site-specific functional sculpture in forged metals.

In 2003, I attended Pilchuck Glass School to learn the basics of hot casting and glassblowing. We built a hot shop here in Bigfork, Montana and we are exploring new glass techniques, combining this most exciting material with various forged metals. I can see that the possibilities are endless and I feel honored to have the opportunity to follow this dream. Lee Proctor

Celebrate the 4th of July in Bigfork, Montana - Monday, July 4th, 2011

Enjoy a good old-fashioned 4th of July Parade at 12:00 noon downtown Bigfork, Montana

Veterans usually lead off the parade marching along with Old Glory and the Montana Flag. The Shriner’s can always be counted on to ride their miniature model T's in the parade along as well as the Bigfork Fire Department and Flathead Lake Lodge Fire Trucks. The parade also features cheerleaders, dancers, horses, bikes, and classic cars.

Be sure to arrive early so that you can find a great viewing spot along Electric Avenue Downtown Bigfork, Montana…. Grand and Electric are cleared of cars and they seemed so empty an hour before the parade. By the time the parade arrives, the streets were filled with spectators.

The parade is lots of fun, especially for the kids, because many of the parade entrants give candy to all the people along the route and the kids scramble around trying to beat each other to it.

A Children's Carnival follows the 4th of July Parade at Sliter’s Memorial Park in Bigfork. The Bigfork Chamber and Retail Merchants sponsor and staff this old fashioned kids carnival.

"Ducks for Bucks" race the "Wild Mile" of the Swan River at 4:00pm.

The first ducks to go under the bridge will win cash prizes. Proceeds go to support the Bigfork High School scholarship program. Ducks can be purchased at the Jug Tree or at the Bigfork Area Chamber of Commerce.
Costs are $5 per duck
or a 'six quack" for $25.

If you would like to be in the 4th of July Parade -

Line up for the parade takes place about one hour before parade time and line up is on Grand Drive Starting at Flathead Bank and winding p past Lake View Care Center. No registration is needed. A traffic director will be present to guide entries. Positions are usually determined on a first-come, first-served basis, so get entrants who want to be in front should arrive early.

The parade moves down Grand Drive and turns onto Electric Avenue, dispersing right before the one-lane Upper Bigfork Bay Bridge.

Plowing the Going-to-the-Sun Road is a monumental challenge every year.

This year the Going to the Sund Road has had lots of unpredictable spring snow storms or other weather related events that have slowed down the process of plowing the Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park.

It is very common for plowing crews to need to re-plow sections of park roads when weather related events occur. These unknown weather factors make predicting the opening of the Going-to-the-Sun Road impossible. The plowing crews have experienced snow depths of up to 20-25 feet through numerous snow slides as they work their way up the Going to The Sun Road.

Safety first is a key factor for the Glacier National Park road plowing crew to make sure that the plowing crews, contractors, and the public are safe at all times.

Glacier National Park - West Side Plowing Activity crews have plowed 1.5 lanes from the Grizzly area to Swede Point approximately 9.5 miles from the vehicle closure gate at the Loop.

Glacier National Park - East Side Plowing Activity crews have been plowing towards the Jackson Glacier Overlook, and are at the Jackson Glacier vehicle closure gate.

Please, Please, Please RSVP by the date requested on your nieces invitation. Remember the person paying for the food needs an accurate count of everyone attending the wedding to plan for enough food for their hungry guests.

Your GIFT:
Be a great gift giver. Pick out a thoughtful card, write something personal inside. Buy from the couple’s wedding gift registry or write them a check. Base your gift on how close you are to the couple, whether you are attending with a guest (multiple gift by two) and how much you can afford. Send the gift to the couple before the wedding – please do not bring the gift to the wedding.

Your OUTFIT:
Ladies do not wear white or cream to a wedding. If the event is a black tie affair respect the couple’s wishes. Men should wear a tuxedo and ladies a party/evening dress.

The Meet and Greet:
Be sure to talk to the bride and the groom, and to the bride and the groom’s families. A wedding is a big occasion for the entire family. Take a minute to offer your congratulations even if you have never met the family members. Even a simple thank you for having you is much appreciated. Keep your conversation proportionately to how well you know the person you are talking to.

The Food:
You are there to mingle and celebrate! Your plate represents the cost of your attendance so be a gracious guest and eat everything on your plate.

The Toast:
Please make sure you know the bride’s name. Be the BEST man not the long-winded man. Keep it short with a mix of sincerity and a few jokes. Raunchy stories are for the bachelor party not for the wedding toast.

The Open Bar:
Drink responsibly. Drink and be merry but don’t embarrass yourself or cause a scene that detracts from the bride and groom. If you are with “that” kind person please escort them directly to their bed to sleep it off.

The Reception:
If there is a band or DJ you need to dance at least once or twice it’s the right thing to do. If you do not like to dance or are a very bad dancer please at least socialize, request an appropriate song, and clap after each dance.

The Cake Cutting:
Popular tradition of cutting the cake signals the time when guests can politely leave for whatever reason. i.e. they are tired, have small children at home, are eight months pregnant, are elderly, have to get up very early to catch their flight back home, are grumpy, etc.

Remember if you are one of those people who are thinking about leaving right after the cake cutting think about what you will miss…the First Dance followed right after the groom's heartfelt thank you, you don’t want to miss that or the Father Daughter dance, the Mother Son song, the DJ playing just the right song to open up the dance floor for everyone to dance, the bouquet and garter toss, the special surprise the bride has planned for the groom and the send off for the bride and groom a magical ending for a perfect wedding night with bubbles and sparklers.

National Amateur Retriever Championships Field Trials June 19th thru June 25th, 2011

Polson and Ronan going to the Dogs! The National Amateur Retriever Club is hosting the 2011 National Amateur Retriever Championships Field Trials (Outdoors) from June 19th through June 25th in the Mission Valley. The events are being held at four locations throughout the Mission Valley – two in Polson, Montana and two in Ronan, Montana.

Many of the owners, trainers, and dogs have already begun to arrive. They are expecting approximately 300 participants. The KwaTaqNuk in Polson, Montana is the Official Headquarters for the National Amateur Retriever Championship event. Many of the events will be ending at 8 pm in the evening.

This is a unique event for Polson and Ronan and we would like to welcome all those associated with the

Mission Valley, Montana – Ideal Area for Retriever Enthusiasts

Ronan, Montana is a small agricultural city in Northwestern Montana located on the Flathead Indian Reservation about 12 miles south of Flathead Lake. Named after Major Peter Ronan, superintendent of the Flathead Indian Reservation, the area is surrounded by the Mission Mountains and has plenty of the famous Montana fishing rivers and wildlife in the valley.

The area just west of Ronan has recently been settled by several members of the Retriever Field Trial community. Back in the ice age, as the glaciers receded, several potholes were left that formed plenty of natural ponds. The potholes, combined with soil that has a lot of clay, holds the water in the ponds, which works well for retriever enthusiasts. There are lots of nice rolling hills making excellent terrain for both training and trialing of retrievers.

Don Remein, one of the top professional trainers in the sport of Retriever Field Trialing, was among the first dog trainers in the area. Karl Gunzer, another pro who was Don’s assistant several years ago, has also settled in the Mission Valley recently, along with Eric Fangsrud and Carol Kackelmeyer.

According to Anna Calvert, secretary of the Mission Valley Retriever Club (formerly the Jackson Hole Retriever Club), in today’s declining market, farmers had a difficult time making a living off the ground. When dog people began coming into the area, the farmers were thrilled to sell their farms, and retriever owners were more than pleased to get land at a very reasonable price. Needless to say, with all the amateur dog handlers buying up the property, the price of ground quickly escalated.

Among the amateur handlers in the Mission Valley area are Anna and Larry Calvert, Alice Woodyard, Judy Bly, Carma Futhey, Janet Olson, John Pampy, Bill and Lorna Kolstad, Richard Underwood, Judy Rasmuson, Rich and Leigh Larsen, Bill and Sarita McKnight (whose dog, Moochie, won the 2008 Canadian National Amateur) and Tony and Jan Snow. Many of these amateurs have developed their property into outstanding field trial training and trialing grounds, while other owners are still in the process of improving theirs.

While the gorgeous Big Sky country of Montana is outstanding for spring and fall training, the difficult winters are a different game. Most (if not all) the dog people in Mission Valley head to the warmer climates of Texas, Florida and California during the winter months.

The Mission Valley Retriever Club held two field trials this year in the area, one in May and the other in August. They are hopeful that they can hold a National Amateur Retriever Championship on their property in the near future when it is the Mountain Time Zone’s turn to host the trial.

This easy truffle recipe is oh so rich and delicious!

The recipe makes a large amount but you can vary the flavors and coatings to make several different kinds of truffles.

TRUFFLE RECIPE
ingredients needed:
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened
3 cups semisweet chocolate chips, melted
3 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla

DIRECTIONS:
In a large bowl, beat cream cheese until smooth.
Gradually add confectioners' sugar until well blended.
Stir in melted chocolate and vanilla until no streaks remain.
Shape into 1 inch balls and place on a baking sheet lined with waxed paper
Refrigerate for about 1 hour

Coatings Roll Truffles in:

Chopped nuts (pecans, walnuts, cashews, pistachios, or peanuts)
Cocoa powder
Chocolate sprinkles
Icing sugar
Toasted coconut or Coconut

Dipping Truffles:
Dip in white chocolate, dark chocolate, or milk chocolate
Drop truffles, one at a time, into melted chocolate mixture.
Using 2 forks, lift truffles out of the chocolate,
Allowing any excess chocolate to drip back into the pan before transferring back onto baking sheet.
Chill until set.

Adding Flavors to the Truffles
Raspberry (instead of vanilla):
Add ½ cup seedless raspberry jam and 2 tablespoons raspberry liqueur

Lemon
Substitute the semisweet chocolate chips with white chocolate chips and the vanilla with 6 tablespoons of lemon curd

Cherry (instead of vanilla):
Add ½ cups cherry jam

Orange (instead of vanilla):
Add 2 tablespoons orange liqueur and 1 teaspoon orange zest

Add your favorite Spices to the Truffles such as:
Anise
Cinnamon
Cardamom
Pomegranate
Cloves
Cayenne

Add Fruit to your Truffles:
Blueberry’s
Dried Cherries
Pineapple
Cranberries and Apricots

The very first Father's Day was observed on Sunday, June 19th, 1910 in Spokane, Washington and by coincidence this year Father's day also falls on Sunday, June 19th.

Mrs. John B. Dodd, of Washington, first proposed the idea of a "father's day" in 1909.
Mrs. Dodd wanted a special day to honor her father, William Smart.

William Smart, a Civil War veteran, who was widowed when his wife (Mrs. John B. Dodd's mother) died in childbirth with their sixth child. Mr. William Smart was left to raise the newborn and his other five children by himself on a rural farm in eastern Washington state.

It was after Mrs. John B.Dodd became an adult that she realized the strength and selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent.

In 1924 President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national Father's Day.

Finally in 1966 President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as Father's Day.

Thankfully, Father's Day has become a day to not only honor our father, but all men who act as a father figure to us.

Thoughts of Summer -Firebrand Pass Trail – Glacier National Park

Firebrand Pass Trail

This day hike has Aspen groves, abundant wildflowers, huckleberries galore when in season, fantastic views, an elevation gain of 2,210 feet, limited shade, very little rain, and can be windy at times.

The Firebrand Pass Trail is a long way away from civilization and hiking in it's isolation is extraordinary. Outdoors people love this part of Montana for this reason - solitude.

The trailhead is located just below Marias Pass at mile marker 203 on US Highway 2 between West Glacier and East Glacier (on the southeastern border of Glacier National Park) next to the railroad tracks.

The parking area is along the BNSF Right of Way and the road to the parking area is somewhat difficult to see if traveling too fast. Decrease your car speed to below 15 mph before turning off Highway 2.

After parking your car in the parking area walk across the railroad tracks, being especially cautious to look and listen for numerous freight trains and the Amtrak passenger train passing by on the railroad tracks at 60 to 70 mph.

Look for the Firebrand trailhead sign near the gate.

Firebrand Pass is 4.8 miles each way.

The trail climbs gently following Coonsa Creek.

At 1.4 miles the trail junctions with the Autumn Creek Trail stay to the right for the Firebrand Pass Trail. The trail goes along the flanks of Calf Robe Mountain with views of Red Crow Mountain in the distance.

At 2.4 miles there is another Junction turn to the left for Firebrand Pass. The trail will continue up very steeply angling Southwest to Firebrand Pass.

Firebrand Pass is 4.8 miles from the trailhead, our lunch stop and our turning point to head back down the trail to your car.

Please remember anytime you are hiking in Glacier National Park that you are hiking deep into Grizzly and Black bear country. It is a must to know about bear safety when hiking in the wilderness. Each hiker should carry bear spray and know how to use it.

Calf Robe Mountain has an elevation of 7895 feet
is part of the Clark Range and is located approximately 6 miles northeast of Marias Pass in the southern portion of Glacier National Park. The Continental Divide passes over the summit of Calf Robe Mountain and makes an abrupt turn northward as it runs through the entirety of Glacier National Park to just north of Brown Pass at the International Border with Canada.

Red Crow Mountain has an elevation of 7891 feet
and is located in the remote southeastern corner of Glacier National Park just north of Firebrand Pass and is also a member of the Lewis and Clark Range.

Note: You can continue on to Ole Lake (another 3 miles) but the Firebrand Pass Trail will descend steeply 2,680 feet down to Ole Lake Campground - a free backcountry permit is required to camp overnight at Ole Lake Campground.

Sliter Park Memorial Dedication will be Sunday, June 5th, 2011 at 4 pm
The Dedication of the new Memorial will honor Bigfork's pioneers and veterans.

The new Memorial features two bronze statues, Pioneer Woman and Fallen Heroes along with a 25' lighted flag pole, signs and plantings. Surrounding the base of the flag pole are memorial bricks purchased to honor family members and friends.

Roughly 100,000 pounds of rock were brought in for the memorial, the biggest weighing 12,000 pounds for the military part of the memorial, Murphy said, Landscaping work is also being done.

The sculpture for the veterans memorial is complete, as the finished sculpture by Ken Bjorge was donated by General Paul and Muffin Vallely.

Approximately 120 of the 4-by-8 inch bricks that will make up a path to circle the U.S. flag have been purchased for inscriptions.

The pathways will also have room for more as needed. Jerry Murphy hopes to have 200 sold by the dedication. The bricks are one of the key fundraisers to pay for this project. People have also made monetary donations as well as donations of time and equipment.

The cost for one brick is $50. Those who order two or more can purchase them at $40 apiece.

The remote setting of Kintla Lake

with it's spectacular scenery of Glacier National Park gives you a recipe for a wonderful fishing trip.

Kintla Lake is a beautiful lake that lies in the remote, wild, northwest corner of Glacier National Park.

Kintla Lake's remote setting, combined with the bumpy, slow ride, tend to keep visitor traffic and use of Kintla lake low. A must see Kintla Lake in Glacier National Park is well worth the long and bumpy drive to reach it though.

A small campground at the end of the road and no other amenities to be found nearby create a great place for your remote fishing/camping trip. The fish in Kintla Lake are fun to catch.

Kintla Lake is over 8 miles in length and up to a mile wide in spots.
Kintla Lake is surrounded by towering mountains and lies in a spectacular setting.

The fishing in Kintla Lake is good for whitefish and cutthroat trout.
The fish eagerly rise to most small dry flies.
Small spoons on spin casting outfits work well too.

Motorized vessels are not allowed on Kintla Lake but it is an ideal place to fish using a canoe, pontoon boat, float tubes, or inflatable kayak. While Kintla Lake can be windy at times, the winds are usually light to moderate. The huge size of Kintla Lake combined with the very cold water can limit your fishing time when you use float tubes to fish.

Most of Kintla Lake and it's vicinity are used for camping or for hiking there is a fairly popular trailhead -the Boulder Pass Trail - used for overnight backpacking that begins at Kintla Lake.

This section of Glacier National Park is very remote and is prime habitat for grizzly bears,
be sure to take all necessary precautions for storing of food and when hiking in the area.

Pick up the Piegan Pass trail at Siyeh Bend about 3 miles (5km) on the east side of Logan Pass Visitor Center.

It's a 12-1/2-mile (20km) walk up over Piegan Pass, past Grinnell Glacier and Grinnell Lake down to Josephine Lake and Swiftcurrent Lake before reaching the Many Glacier Lodge.

There are long stretches of up and down walking.

This trail is an excellent way to get a sense of Glacier National Park's wilderness.

Amazing spectacular scenic views, beautiful Flora and Fauna.

And Preston Park were the trail junction for the

Piegan Pass Trail and Siyeh Pass Trail intersect is famous for wildflowers and a photographers paradise.

On the far side of the pass after entering into a grove of sub-alpine-fir you will find Feather Plume Falls.

The Piegan Pass Trail provides you with many different views of this spectacular water fall.

Feather Plume Falls cascades over a large expanse of the Grinnell (red rock) Formation.

Note:
Piegan Glacier is one of very few glaciers in Glacier National Park that shows little sign of change when comparing photographs of Piegan Glacier in 1900's photographs to the present day photographs.

Piegan Glacier is situated in a cirque on the southeast slope of Piegan Mountain just below the summit at an elevation between 8,800 feet and 8,200 feet.

Piegan glacier covers an area of approximately 62 acres.

Kerr Dam’s generating capacity is 194 megawatts and is located at 43069 Kerr Dam Road, Polson, MT 59860

Kerr dam, began operation in 1938, and is 541 feet long and 205 feet high. The installation of Kerr Dam raised the level of Flathead Lake by 10 feet over the natural lake outlet.

Kerr Dam’s 28-mile-long reservoir has a storage capacity of 1.2 million acre-feet of water. Kerr Dam is classified as a “storage generation” project because it uses the water stored in its reservoir to generate electricity.

Kerr Dam is operated under a joint license with PPL Montana and the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Indian Nation. The CSKT have the option of purchasing and taking over the operation of Kerr Dam in 2015.

Flathead Lake, which lies in the Flathead Valley of northwest Montana, is the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi. The lake is 28 miles long, up to 15 miles wide and more than 300 feet deep. The Flathead River empties into the Clark Fork River, then empties into the Columbia River. The Columbia then empties into the Pacific Ocean.

The newest Whitefish Mountain Resort (formerly Big Mountain Resort) experience is a three-hour, half-day educational adventure that offers a unique view of a majestic, managed forest and the interconnected ecosystems of water, wildlife and plants.

Walk in the Tree Tops begins with a one mile bike ride to a clearing amid a large stand of trees.

For those who prefer, a motorized shuttle is also provided for transportation.

A safety orientation is given before the tour continues with a short hike to the start of the boardwalk for a visual orientation of the course.

You must wear climbing harnesses and are connected with relay lines to safety cables suspended above the boardwalk.

Montana Wildlife - Bears Emerging from their Dens

Everyone that visits Montana expects to see some kind of wildlife during a trip here to Montana.
And almost all visitors say they’d love to see a bear, a moose, or mountain goat........

While we can’t guarantee that you will see a bear, we can promise that if you keep a good eye out, you’ll probably spot some of Montana’s other wildlife.

Recent observations of bear tracks in the snow indicate bears are emerging from hibernation and venturing out looking for food in and around Glacier National Park.

With the mountains getting hit with another snow storm this week and the bears becoming more active after the long winter it’s an indicator that spring is definitely on the way.

When black bears and grizzly bears emerge from their dens they search for primary sources of much-needed food like winter-kill wildlife and succulent vegetation.

Always remember that female bears with cubs are particularly dangerous when they come out of their dens, they are searching for food and are very, very aggressively about protecting their food sources.

Because the natural food bears eat, in spring, is still covered under several feet of snow the bears are attracted to the scents of food items, garbage, pet foods, gardens, fruit trees, birdseed, hummingbird feeders, etc. This attraction can lead to dangerous conflicts between bears and people.

NOTEWOTHY:
Let the bears be themselves.
Resist the urge to get too close. Bears are not pets and they are not in a zoo. Disrupting that natural order could be disastrous for the bear and dangerous for you, the viewer.

Use binoculars or zoom lenses to get that close-up
a 400 mm lens is best bear/wildlife photos

Leave no trace.
Trash and garbage can be deadly for animals. Bring along a trash bag to put your trash into and carry it out and dispose of your trash properly.

Never feed the animals.
Yes, a chipmunk, asquirrel, or a marmot can be very cute but sharing your lunch with them can harm their digestive systems. These animals need to learn to find food for themselves for survival.

Do research.
Check with a Park Ranger to learn about local bear habitat, bear regulations, and bear safety.

Bear Spray.
Always carry bear spray with you when in our local bear country.

History of Mother's Day

Motherhood has always been celebrated through the ages of time. Even in prehistoric tribes the mother Goddess was worshiped as the creator of life. For example:

In ancient Egypt, Isis was the Queen of Heaven who ruled over all matters concerning mothering.

In ancient Greece, Rhea was revered as the mother goddess.

In ancient Rome, it was Hera, the jealous wife of Zeus and mother goddess Cybele.

During these ancient times “mothering festivals” were celebrated to honor the goddess in all women back. The festivals were held in the springtime to commemorate the rebirth of the land.

In the USA, Anna Jarvis campaigned for the establishment of an official Mother’s Day to commemorate her mother. “Miss Anna Jarvis was as good as her word. She devoted her entire life to the struggle to have Mother's Day declared a national holiday.

In the spring of 1908, Anna wrote to the Superintendent of Andrew's Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia, where her mother had taught Sunday school classes for over 20 years. She requested that a Mother's Day service be held in honor of her mother, Ann Maria Reeves Jarvis. The first official Mother's Day celebration was held at Andrew's Methodist Church on May 10, 1908, with 407 persons in attendance.

Anna Jarvis sent 500 white carnations to the church in Grafton. Anna Jarvis, chose the carnation because it was her mother’s favorite flower. One carnation was to be worn by each son and daughter and two by each mother in attendance.” The carnation is the traditional flower for Mother’s Day for that reason.

“Another service was held in Philadelphia later that afternoon where Anna resided with her brother. Anna had requested that the first official service be held in Grafton, where the Jarvis family had lived so much of their lives and where her mother had served for so long as a teacher and public servant."

Anna Jarvis was actually arrested at a Mother’s Day festival while trying to stop women from selling flowers. Jarvis said “I wanted it to be a day of sentiment not profit.”

Anna Jarvis’ efforts are the reason we have a formal Mother’s Day holiday today.

In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared that Mother’s Day a national holiday on the second Sunday in May.

Despite Jarvis's misgivings, Mother's Day has flourished in the United States. The second Sunday of May has become the most popular day of the year to dine out, and telephone lines record their highest traffic, as sons and daughters everywhere take advantage of this day to honor and to express appreciation of their mothers.

Mother's Day is dedicated to honoring the women who give so much to their families without asking for anything in return.

Perhaps every day should be Mother's Day?

Today most families are too busy with the “everyday” happenings to say thank you for every meal she makes especially my favorites, for all of my childhood memories, for reading me a bedtime story, for inspiring us, for mending a scraped knee, for caring about who my friends are, for knowing just the right thing to do when I am so very sick, for doing the laundry so that we have clean clothes, for driving us to soccer practice, for every good night kisses, for helping me to deal with life's stresses, and accept my defeats and successes.

The modern Mother's Day practice of families bringing flowers and gifts to their moms can be traced back to seventeenth century England. Flowers, cards and gifts are just the outward signs. Once every year on Mother’s Day, the world stops being so busy and says thank you to Mom’s.

What mothers love most is the fact that their families really do notice all that they do for them…….Happy Mother's Day!
